The records are primarily the files of Thomas Rodd, Chief Engineer of Lines West from 1889 to 1918. However, they also contain files from the following subordinate officers: Robert Trimble, Chief Engineer of Maintenance of Way, Northwest System (1903-1920) and William C. Cushing, Chief Engineer of Maintenance of Way, Southwest System (1903-1920). Additional files were taken from predecessors, Max J. Becker, Chief Engineer of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway and predecessors (1870-1896), F. T. Hatch, Chief Engineer of the Vandalia Railroad (1905-1917) and J. C. Bland, Engineer of Bridges & Buildings. The various files appear to have been consolidated by Robert Trimble after he became Assistant Chief Engineer at Pittsburgh (1920-1926), and he kept some files open, continuing coverage of the same projects after the dissolution of the Lines West organization.

The post of Chief Engineer of Lines West was not established until January 1, 1901. This reflects the slower pace of integration of Lines West from its many component railroads.
